Response:
From the online resources cited above:

"UNC Charlotte officials have mailed certified letters to more than 140 individuals to notify them that their personal information was stolen by a student employee last month. Certified letters were mailed Oct. 12 to each person the university believes was potentially affected."

"The files were stolen from the Office of Student Financial Aid."

"The theft was uncovered following an investigation by campus police into several reports of fraudulent credit card activity, according to university officials."

"The letter sent by the university advised the 148 potential victims to place a fraud alert on their credit file."

"the student employee responsible for the theft has been identified and is currently cooperating with law enforcement officials"

"It is believed that all of the stolen files have been accounted for and that the risk of additional fraudulent activity is low."

"To help minimize the likelihood of another such breach, the University has already taken several precautionary measures to protect confidential information."
[Comfyllama] Do tell.  Like what?

Student Reactions:
"As soon as I heard about it, everyone was going, 'Was it me? Who's this person that took the information?’” said Paul Lascara, a student.

"It's a little disconcerting that it kind of hit a little closer to home than usual,” said Jonathan Daley, a student.

"You never know who has your stuff or who's able to get to your things, so you have to be careful,” said student Jennifer Robinson.

Commentary:
Employee fraud is one of the most difficult breaches to protect against, just ask Certegy.  Judging from what I read, it appears like this was a smooth and well conducted investigation that led to a culprit.  It stinks that people were victimized.
